THE MIURA HB3 HYBRID REVIEW

As most of us already know, the Miura name has become synonymous with quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and performance.  This was apparent in our reviews of Miura wedges. When the opportunity came up to review the Miura HB3 hybrid (20 degrees of loft), I was very intrigued. Miura also offers an HB4 model which has 23 degrees of loft. I will confess up front that I have never been able to find a hybrid that I could get to perform as well or better than my long irons. I have a bunch of hybrids in my garage to attest to this, however, I am ever-hopeful. As I warmed up on the range for my first round I went through my normal routine, working my way up to the longer clubs. I got to the Hybrid and here it’s wo...

How Playing Golf Makes You an Analytical Thinker

Most golfers hit the course with a one-track mind. See the ball, hit the ball. They don’t invest themselves in learning how the game of golf is intrinsically strategic. For example, rather than looking for the perfect spot to land their drive, they reach back and try to hit the longest drive possible. What these golfers are losing in the process is the ability to become more analytical as a golfer and how that can translate to other areas of their life such as business. Here are five ways that playing golf can increase your capacity as an analytical thinker and how that will pay dividends to all areas of your life. To be a great golfer you have to become aware of everything that surrounds you. With each shot, golfers have to account for the wind, the lie of the ball, and what the condition is for the target area. By immersing yourself in how the outside world affects something as small as a golf shot, you’ll become more aware at how the moods, feelings and the language ...

Rules of Golf 2019: My Reaction

The Rules of Golf are changing in 2019 and there are several changes that stand out to me. Earlier this week I watched a short YouTube video from Rick Shiels discussing a few of the changes you need to be aware of. Then I found a list of 20 of the most important changes. Below I will list and react to these. Keep in mind, I play golf every week/weekend and while I don’t play a lot of competitive golf, I try to play by the Rules of Golf. Some of these rules are good and will potentially increase pace of play. Some, though, are silly and unnecessary. Let’s discuss. 1. Search time – Reduced from 5 to 3 minutes I LOVE this change. You don’t need 5 minutes to find your golf ball. If you don’t see it, after 1 or 2 minutes, accept it and drop. Will be curious to see if any PGA TOUR players are put on the clock for this. Of course TOUR players have a slight advantage of someone seeing where their ball ends up. 2. Ball moving during search – replace (no penal...

PGA Tour Q-School: Inside the numbers

PGA Tour Q-School's second stage wrapped up across six venues Saturday, with seven players, who have a some sort of a connection to Manatee County, advancing to the final stage at Orange County National's Crooked Cat and Panther courses Dec. 1-6. Today's recap takes a magnifying glass approach to see just how they continued the quest for a PGA Tour card. There's also a glimpse into how a couple other players' dreams vanished when they flamed out in the final round of their qualifying site. (Note: all have played at least one West Florida Golf Tour event except Tyler Leon, Ty Tryon, David Lutterus and Jason Kokrak) Redstone Golf Club  in Humble, Texas (19 players and ties advanced; cut: 2-over, 290) Former Saint Stephen's standout Tyler Leon shot 5-under over his last 54 holes, including birdies on his last two holes, to tie for 11th and secure a final stage berth. Redstone's 73.19 scoring average plagued most of the field, but Leon grinded through with 13...

Break 100: 5 Tips to Lower Your Scores

Breaking 100 may seem a distant dream no matter how close you get to the landmark barrier. Before we give you  5 tips  on helping you do this, revisit the opening statement and how the language we use is a big problem. Landmark, barrier, and so many more words make shooting a score that is less than 100 seem so out of reach. Your mindset is  crucial  when it comes to improving your scores. Let’s get ready to Break 100! 1. Don’t add up your score until the end Do you add up your scores as you are playing? Do you know exactly what your score is at any given point during the game? Have you had 3 holes left and you know exactly what score you need to break 100? This is a really bad idea – imagine you had a caddy and he told you that all you need on the last hole is a bogey to break 100! This puts undue pressure on you. By focusing on the outcome, you won’t be able to focus on one shot at a time. So, next time you play, tell your playing partners not to...

Most Common Golf Injuries and How to Prevent Them

One thing I have learned as I have gotten older is that things hurt now that never did when I was younger. I have no idea how many times in my life I have put on my golf shoes, grabbed my clubs, and gone to the first tee, taken a couple of practice swings and then teed off. Now it is necessary to warm up prior to a round by stretching, loosening up, and hitting a few practice balls before going to the first tee. When I was younger I never gave my back a second thought and now I have to cater to it. Playing in cold weather can make things worse.
